So yeah, I got some messages asking why did I whitewash Candela and Blanche, so I’m gonna answer all of them in this one post if that’s okay. The thing is, this one piece I drew, I mainly focus on the GF characters, which was obviouly my mistake.
Multitudes of notorious trainers have vanished and the world looks towards oblivion until three trainers decide to take up the mantle of Pokmon Masters. I should have been more careful with every characters I put in the picture. Spark needs to talk to Blanche and Candela, but afterwards the very foundation of their world starts to crumble.
Blanche and candela skin#
What i did is that I look at the official art, and I noticed that these two have dark skin tone so I picked a color that was slightly darker than what I actually use for coloring skin as a base color. And after I colored everything I merged all the layers and I adjust color of the whole thing using Soft Light efffect. (The effect makes things look brighter and more saturated.) I adjust it to the point that I thought my GF characters look okay for me. I didn’t even notice that I made Candela and Blanche look so white, almost the same color as Dipper and Mabel until you guys pointed it out. Candela’s campouts are the highlight of the program, where she takes her group out into the woods for a weekend to get a hands on experience with catching wild pokemon, and teach them basic survival skills. So that was my huge mistake for not paying enough attention to them.
Blanche’s Mystic program is for high school students who are seriously considering working in the pokemon sciences as a career. I’m asian and I didn’t realize that this could be a pretty sensitive issue. Next time I draw a fan art of these two, i’ll be more careful. While team leaders Candela, Spark, and Blanche were widely popular during the game's launch, Pokmon GO has made little use of them in Special Research Stories or overarching event storylines in recent years. And I promise you I’ll make it right next time.
